Instructions for preparing for the examination

Preparation for an Internal Medicine Examination

Arrive for your examination promptly at the scheduled time.
Fast for 6 hours prior to the examination. Ensure your bladder is moderately full; do not empty it before the examination unless instructed otherwise by a nurse or physician (e.g., for diabetic patients).
Take all medications as usual with water and at the usual time. In special cases, follow additional instructions from your doctor or nurse.
Bring your health insurance card, a copy of the referral, important laboratory and other test results, and records of blood pressure measurements to the appointment.

Why and When Is Preparation Necessary for an Ultrasound?

Preparation for an ultrasound is necessary to ensure optimal conditions for the following examinations:

Abdominal ultrasound
Ultrasound of abdominal vessels
Ultrasound of the urinary tract and prostate

How to Prepare for an Ultrasound

Consume only non-gas-inducing foods the day before the examination.
Do not eat for the last 6 hours before the examination.
You may drink fluids, but only non-carbonated ones.
Empty your bowels before the examination using a mild laxative.
Drink enough water one hour before the examination to adequately fill the bladder.
Do not empty your bladder before the examination.

When Preparation for an Ultrasound Is Not Necessary

Transcranial Doppler ultrasound (TCD)
Ultrasound of neck vessels
Ultrasound of upper and lower limb arteries
Ultrasound of upper and lower limb veins
Ultrasound of arteriovenous fistulas for dialysis
Neck ultrasound
Joint ultrasound
Muscle ultrasound
Tendon ultrasound
Ultrasound of other soft tissues.
Remove jewelry (necklaces, chains) before the examination of neck vessels.

How an Ultrasound Examination Works

The ultrasound examination process is painless and can be performed lying down or standing up.
A harmless gel is used for a quality ultrasound display.
Patient cooperation may be necessary during the examination.
The examination is completed within 15-45 minutes.
